Lamine Yamal injury update for Barça’s Champions League opener

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal is highly unlikely to feature in the club’s 2025-26 Champions League debut. The 18-year-old winger skipped Tuesday morning’s training session at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, where head coach Hansi Flick led preparations ahead of Thursday’s clash with Newcastle United.

Injury Setback After International Duty
Yamal returned from Spain’s national team camp carrying a groin injury. Although he was barely able to train with Spain due to discomfort, he still featured in both matches, which aggravated the problem. The injury also forced him to miss Barcelona’s last La Liga fixture against Valencia.
Barcelona’s final training session before the European opener will take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at St. James’ Park. Flick will announce the official squad list earlier in the day, ahead of the team’s flight to Newcastle.
Speaking at a press conference, Flick confirmed that the winger’s issue stems from a strain picked up with Spain, which has now developed into a more serious injury. As a result, Yamal is virtually ruled out of Thursday’s 9:00 p.m. kickoff in Newcastle.
