Thomas Partey “mentally prepared” for Tottenham Clash Despite Court case

Villarreal head coach Marcelino has insisted that Thomas Partey is “mentally prepared” to face Tottenham in the opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, just a day before the Ghanaian midfielder is scheduled to appear in a London court.
Partey, 32, faces five counts of rape against two women and one charge of sexual assault against a third woman. Despite the looming legal proceedings, Marcelino believes his player remains focused.
“I’m totally convinced that he is mentally prepared, technically prepared, to play the game tomorrow night,” Marcelino told reporters. “He’s a great player with lots of experience. He’s played in top sides, and we know his ability and level.”
When Marcelino was asked if he had spoken to Partey about the potential hostility he will receive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he had this to say:
"We're interpreting stuff about and talking about a player that could be totally innocent," said Marcelino.
"We're playing a game of football tomorrow where the important thing is football.
"This is where football was invented after all. Do you understand me? Thank you."
Villarreal Move Surrounded by Controversy
The Ghana international joined Villarreal in the summer after leaving Arsenal on a free transfer. His signing sparked initial protests from supporters, given the ongoing allegations. Partey was formally charged just *four days after his Arsenal exit.
At the time of his signing, Villarreal issued a statement reaffirming their position:
“The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process. Due to the law in England relating to ongoing proceedings, the club is unable to comment further.”
Partey has so far made four appearances for the Spanish side this season.
Court Appearance on Wednesday
Following Tuesday’s match, Partey is due at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday for a plea hearing. His lawyer has stated that he “denies all charges” and is determined to clear his name.
Focus on Champions League Opener
Marcelino, however, stressed that his attention is on Villarreal’s Champions League opener at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“We’re playing a game of football tomorrow, where the important thing is football,” the manager said. “He’s with the group, he’s available, and if nothing happens fitness-wise, he will be with us.”
