Former Tottenham Boss Eyed by Two European Giants

Ange Postecoglou’s rollercoaster spell at Tottenham ended just three months ago, but the Australian coach could soon be back in management.

Postecoglou delivered Spurs their first trophy in 17 years, with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final back in May. Yet his European triumph was marred by a disastrous Premier League campaign that saw Spurs finish 17th, losing 22 league matches.

Daniel Levy decided a reset was needed, replacing him with Thomas Frank, who has since made a promising start in North London. Postecoglou, however, remains a respected name across the continent, and is now firmly on the radar of two big European names in Bayer Leverkusen and Fenerbahce.

Leverkusen Eye a Reset

Leverkusen’s decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag after just two Bundesliga games shocked many in the footballing world when the decision was announced on Monday. A 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim and a 3-3 collapse against 10-man Werder Bremen signaled a poor start for Ten Hag, with only a routine German Cup victory on his record.

The German giants, however, are still positioned to offer one of Europe’s most appealing vacancies. They will compete in the Champions League this season, facing a tricky league-phase draw against the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United, PSG, Benfica and PSV.

For Postecoglou, who guided Celtic to Champions League football before his move to Spurs, the opportunity to manage at that level again could prove irresistible. His high-tempo, attacking philosophy could appeal to the German side, and his experience rebuilding clubs could appeal to Leverkusen’s hierarchy as they look to steady themselves after a chaotic summer.

There’s also the intriguing possibility of Postecoglou meeting Spurs in Europe. Should both sides reach the top 24 in the league phase, a reunion with his former club could be on the cards in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Fenerbahce Also in the Frame

Meanwhile in Turkey, Fenerbahce are searching for a new direction after parting ways with Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach, also a former Spurs boss, lasted just one full season in Istanbul, losing in the Champions League playoffs to Benfica before being shown the door.

Fenerbahce will now compete in the Europa League this year, a competition Postecoglou conquered with Tottenham. The Turkish giants see him as a candidate to restore momentum and to deliver the European pedigree their fans demand.

The allure of Fenerbahce lies not only in their stature, but in the intensity of football in Istanbul. The Super Lig is one of the most passionate environments in world football, and Postecoglou would be expected to deliver immediate success in front of one of the continent’s most demanding fanbases.

Interest Beyond Europe

These aren’t the first links since his Spurs exit. The Australian has been linked with moves all around the globe, with reports stating MLS side LAFC and Saudi giants Al-Ahli both considered him for the managerial hot seat earlier this summer.

That level of interest reflects how highly Postecoglou is regarded, despite his bruising second season at Tottenham. His ability to win trophies wherever he goes and his attractive play style has ensured his reputation remains strong in the wider footballing world.

What Next for Big Ange?

At 60, Postecoglou is unlikely to rush into the wrong move. A Champions League project in Germany or a Europa League challenge in Turkey both represent major opportunities, though each comes with its own risks.

What is clear, however, is that his spell out of the dugout may be short-lived. From South Melbourne to Celtic, from Yokohama to Tottenham, Postecoglou has always bounced back quickly. If Leverkusen or Fenerbahce follow through with their interest, Postecoglou could be about to add another chapter to one of football’s most intriguing managerial careers.
