Can Tottenham Build On Last Years Success? Reviewing The Window And How We May Fair This Season
The transfer window has finally shut and what a rollercoaster it’s been for Tottenham, now seems like a good time to take a minute to reflect on the window and look ahead at least until January.
The Lows
This year’s transfer window was probably one of the most infuriating and draining ones to watch as a fan and we have sat through a window where the club self imposed a transfer ban. The first disappointment came after we triggered the release clause for Morgan Gibbs-White, just for Mr Maranakis to block the move and tie him down to a new deal. What followed was a rather embarrassing chase of Eberechi Eze who after weeks of speculation and having a deal agreed with Palace, signed for Arsenal at the last moment.
The Highs
The window however was not actually that bad, we managed to sign Mohammed Kudus from West Ham and he has already shown us glimpses of what he can do. The signings of Kolo Muani and Joao Palhinha on loan also look to be great for our squad. After the long hunt for a number 10 we somehow managed to fall upwards landing Xavi Simons from under Chelsea's nose.
I’m not going to pretend I have watched every minute of Xavi Simons and that he is going to be the best thing since sliced bread but given his already big reputation and pedigree within the game, I would say he is probably one of the most exciting players we have signed in years.
On top of this excellent business we were able to convince Romero to sign a new deal meaning we keep our star CB. One thing that surprised me about this window is the calibre of player we have signed, compared to our usual bargain hunting from lower premier league sides we have shopped across Europe and signed some very exciting players, it’s almost as if Levy has had enough of shopping at Aldi and signed up for a nectar card and gone for a stroll around Sainsbury’s (even if you could argue they are yellow stickers).

Squad Decisions Ahead: Who Plays On The Left
With all these players coming into the first team, Thomas Frank will have some decisions to make but the big one for the next few months will be the left wing spot. While Simons can play there and may end up being the long term solution due to injuries, he will likely be the 10, leaving Johnson, Tel and Odobert to try and lay claim to the position.
Brennan Johnson was of course our top scorer last year and already has two for himself this season, Tel was signed in January last year during our worst injury crisis ever and despite glimpses of promise is yet to make a real impact. Odobert scored twice against AZ Alkmaar on our run to Bilbao but has missed a lot of matches due to injury.
All three could play the position, however, I do feel that Brennan despite having an inevitability about him in front of goal lacks the 1v1 ability that Odobert possesses. Also, despite Tel being a player I desperately want to succeed, he is seemingly in need of a major confidence boost before we may get the best of him. Therefore, I would like to see the spot given to Odobert for a few matches.
As fans it's so easy to want more than we have but with the window closed we have to work with what we have and I believe now is the time to get behind the three players I have mentioned. All three have terrific potential and could go on to have incredible seasons or they could not make an impact but until they have had a real opportunity we should back them like we would anyone else.
Looking Ahead
I overall feel that the squad has enough firepower now to pose a threat in all the competitions we are participating in and I'm optimistic about our chances in the domestic cups this year. While we may need another player to provide cover at fullback, I think that with Thomas Frank’s pragmatic style we may be able to hold out until January, where we will hopefully look to reinforce, if I was to give our window a rating I think a solid 7 would be my answer.
If I had to make some early predictions now, I would say we could definitely be finishing top 6 again and we can hopefully win the FA Cup. In Europe I think given our draw we should definitely be pushing for automatic qualification out of the group stage too.
Conclusion
While the squad is stronger in the attack I still think we needed one more player to help ease the burden off of our current fullbacks. We also have a minor headache with our European registration, however, I think instead of questioning and complaining (I did enough of that last year) I’m going to back this squad and give them an opportunity to deliver for us.
